The construction is part of a larger UDOT project to repave nine miles of S.R. 190 in Big Cottonwood Canyon. The project began in early July and is scheduled to continue into the fall. Guardsman Pass is also the most dramatic way to enter the Salt Lake City metro area. A steep dirt road ascent, that is virtually deserted when the top portion of the pass is still closed, gives way to a busy paved canyon road with a good shoulder, Big Cottonwood Canyon. Guardsman Pass is one of the best backcountry destinations in Salt Lake County, Utah. With an elevation of 2,962 m (9,717 ft) above the sea level, it's an excellent spot for rock climbing, hiking, and camping.
