group of antibiotics [4,6]. Aerococcus urinae is found in the urinary tract and most, but not all, studies implicate A. urinae as a pathogen in uri-nary tract infections [1,2,4,7,8]. Importantly, A. urinae has been described as a cause of invasive infections such as infec-tious endocarditis (IE) [9], spondylodiscitis [10], septicaemia

A retrospective chart review was performed on 92 patients from whom 118 isolates of Aerococcus sanguinicola (n = 52) or Aerococcus urinae (n = 66) were obtained from urine cultures between October 2007 and June 2008 to assess clinical presentation and antimicrobial susceptibilities.

The 2016 CLSI report introduced, for the first time, cutoffs for determining the antibiotic sensitivity of Aerococcus spp., both by microdilution and by disc diffusion. We identified 64 Aerococcus urinae isolates and 40 Aerococcus sanguinicola isolates, which correlates with an incidence of 33 cases of aerococcal bacteriuria per 100,000 inhabitants per year. The median age was 83years for all patients with aerococcal bacteriuria, which was significantly higher than for patients with Escherichia coli or Enterococcus faecalis bacteriuria. Almost 80 % of patients with aerococcal bacteruria had symptoms of a urinary tract infection. Several antibiotics, including nitrofurantoin and amoxicillin, could serve as treatment options.

Aerococcus sanguinicola antibiotics

Aerococcus sanguinicola is a member of the bacterial genus Aerococcus and is a Gram-positive, catalase-negative coccus growing in clusters. This species was defined in 2001 and has since then been increasingly recognized as a pathogen causing urinary tract infections and also invasive infections including infective endocarditis.

A. urinae, A. sanguinicola, and Aerococcus sp. were all susceptible to both penicillin and ceftriaxone. The majority of Aerococcus viridans and Aerococcus viridans/urinaeequi isolates were not susceptible to penicillin and ceftriaxone. Linezolid had good activity against most species except for Aerococcus viridans.

Aerococcus bacteriuria is known to be common amongst the elderly, with a female predominance . The majority of urinary isolates are Aerococcus urinae (55–66%) followed by Aerococcus sanguinicola (26–46%). Aerococcus viridans is uncommon . Aerococci are also presumed to be part of normal genitourinary tract flora, and isolation in urine may Sex was almost equally distributed between men and women with aerococcal bacteriuria, whereas females dominated in E. coli bacteriuria.

Introduction. During the past decade the clinical relevance of various catalase-negative, Gram-positive cocci has received much attention. 1 Among these, Aerococcus urinae is a newcomer in clinical and microbiological practice, first reported in 1989 2 and designated in 1992. 3 A. urinae isolates were originally recognized by their cell morphology (Staphylococcus-like in Gram's stain) and
